How do you describe the difference between alone and lonely?

Although Thesaurus describes “alone” as a synonym for “lonely” and vice versus, I believe they are more than synonymous. I liked Chelsea Fagan’s approach to the difference as described in a brief excerpt below. “Alone is calm. Who you see is based on how you feel about who you are. Blogger Marc Chernoff says, “You can be the most amazing human being in the world and everyone sees rays of light, love and genius when they look at you. I was drawn to this stream of consciousness at a recent social gathering when the Karaoke machine played “Stop In The Name Of Love!” by the Supremes. I immediately time traveled back to 1965 when young women would jump up to sing along, smile and mimic the sexy moves of the hottest female singing group of the time. She was beautiful. She was a petite three-year-old. She loved Dora the Explorer. They had the same big brown eyes. Unlike Dora, she rarely spoke. I was on my way to choir rehearsal and decided to stop by and see the new affordable housing unit her family called home. We had worked so hard to get them qualified and moved in.
