Rotarians Meesh Peters and Sam Marigu create family beyond borders from Virginia to villiges in Africa.

Today, we are living in an ongoing season of uncertainty and unrest. We have all been touched by a fresh sense of fragility in ourselves and our social systems. This is a testing time. This is a time to accept that empathy is unlimited. This is a time to realize that you are doing better than you think. This is a time to elevate voices of hope. This is the time to reimagine what is essential. This is a time for believers to remember the author of Genesis is also the author of Revelation. He is still in the miracle…

Womens History Month, the origins, and the fight for the right to vote. Let us not go backwards.

Womens History Month, the origins, and the fight for the right to vote. Let us not go backwards.

Join me in a fascinating, energizing, educational, and empowering discussion about how African American women participated in the battle to the ballot box for all women. Enjoy a personal preamble tribute to the “Notorious” Ruth Bader Ginsburg, including some in her own voice. Women’s History Month in the United States grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history, and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. Presentations were given at dozens of schools, hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa.…

Black History Month salutes “Love in Action” with the late Congressman John Lewis and NPR’s Krista Tippett

Black History Month salutes "Love in Action" with the late Congressman John Lewis and NPR's Krista Tippett

First  Corinthians 13: 4-8 says “Love is patient and kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices in the truth. … Love never ends”. Wikipedia says, “Love is considered to be a positive and negative: with its virtue representing human kindness, compassion, and affection, as “the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another”; and its vice representing human moral flaw, akin to vanity, selfishness, and egotism, Author Glennon Doyle Melton expresses love as a message from God, and I quote:  “When you were born, I put a piece of me in…

Black History Month: More than a memoir with Liza Price

Black History Month: More than a memoir with Liza Price

Beauty products entrepreneur Lisa Price was born on May 18, 1962, in Brooklyn, New York. She is the founder of Carol’s Daughter, one of the first African American-owned product lines with a flagship store. During her childhood, she remembers the smell of the soap her grandmother made at their Brooklyn brownstone. In 1990, Price began making creams and lotions based on natural materials in her kitchen. Encouraged by family members and friends, she began Carol’s Daughter from her home in 1993. Her customers soon multiplied. By 1999, Price added mail-order, website, and walk-in customers, and her business moved from the parlor floor…

Imagine an organization that fuels its power through service above self. Join my conversation with Ms. Rene Laws, Rotary 7610 District Governor Elect

Over the past three years, Frankly Speaking with Tyra G has been intentionally curating thematic stories across generations, cultures, and genres. We are learning from and paying tribute to servant leaders, game-changing entrepreneurs, innovative organizations, planting seeds that yield precious harvests, and all who live “despite “rather than “because of.” These leaders and organizations have chosen SERVICE to heal themselves and the nation. Service as a way of lighting up the darkness. Tonight, we are hearing one voice out of 1.4 million members of a 117-year-old international organization called Rotary. Rotary has continued to grow itself into a position of…

REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES. This movie changed me. A Conversation with NPR movie critic Lily Persy and guest commentator, Virgie Tovar

REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES. This movie changed me. A Conversation with NPR movie critic Lily Persy and guest commentator, Virgie Tovar

“Jimmy, Ana’s boyfriend, says, “You’re not fat. You’re beautiful.” She is both. “Real Women Have Curves” doesn’t argue that Ana is beautiful on the “inside,” like the Gwyneth Paltrow character in “Shallow Hal,” but that she is beautiful inside and out–love handles, big boobs, round cheeks, and all. “Turn the lights on,” she shyly tells Jimmy. “I want you to see me. See, this is what I look like.” Ana has learned to accept herself. It is more than her mother can do. There have been several movies recently about the second generation of children of immigrants–Indian, Filipino, Chinese, Korean,…

Thank You for Your Service Then and Now, A Veterans Christmas Show

Thank You for Your Service Then and Now, A Veterans Christmas Show

Veterans from all generations are connected by selfless service, sacrifice, and the belief that they are protecting something greater than themselves. No matter where they are sent, they bring their traditions with them, and Christmas is no exception. However, in his December 2023 article, blogger Mike Woods states that “the holiday season poses unique needs for military service members and veterans. Some ways of showing your support are as simple as sending a card to a deployed soldier, inviting a veteran over for a holiday meal, or shopping at a veteran-owned business. Chances are you know a veteran. Whether it’s…

Unwrapping gifts daddy Jay Little and daughter Gia build a gift of legacy together.

Author Kahlil Gibran in his 1962 book The Prophet says, “And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, Speak to us of Children. And he said: Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of life longing for itself. They come through you but not from you. And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even…

The Voices of Women of Vietnam. Thank you for your service.

The Voices of Women of Vietnam. Thank you for your service.

My goal in November is to share varied war stories across the spectrum of age, gender, and race to include family impact and cultural legacies. I am celebrating veterans and active-duty military who keep us and have kept us out of constant harm’s way, often at high costs. We are reminded that war is a part of human history. The Vietnam war was my coming-of-age war. I became immersed in and confused by the concurrent war at home about the necessity of US involvement while at the same time grieving over school friends who paid the ultimate price. There were…
