What do you do when coaching is not a choice?

What do you do when coaching is not a choice?

Coaching is a process of relationship building and setting goals. The coach develops specific skills for tasks, challenges and performance expectations. How well you coach is related directly to how well you are able to foster a great working relationship. One of the critical ingredients of effective coaching is the ability to ask the right questions. “How many of us are aware there is a right and wrong way to ask a question? Do you know if you ask the wrong question you won’t get the information you need? Nowhere is this truer than in our relationships. For example, rather than asking,…

What does it mean to be “Mountain Strong”?

What does it mean to be "Mountain Strong"?

“What would you do if you had no home and no family? Where would you turn if every road ended at a brick wall? Sarah Bishop Hart, a small, gentlewoman from the hills of Southwest, Virginia was born into a world without hope. When she was five years old, her father her out to a family she had never met. From that day, Sarah never knew a real home or what it is like to have a true family. She ate from table scraps, slept in outbuildings, and never felt welcome – no matter where she was. She lived with…

What happens when you have to be light in the darkness?

What happens when you have to be light in the darkness?

“At night, the ocean can be a huge dark place. When riding the seas, you can never know for sure if the water will be calm or turbulent. You never know if you will drift off course or run aground. That is why there are lighthouses. When ships lose their way, they are guided by the lighthouse. When there is trouble or danger at sea, you can seek refuge by the lighthouse. During a storm, the lighthouse will always guide the ships safely to shore. Best of all, there is always someone in the lighthouse waiting. Be that someone. “Be…

What do you do when you feel powerless?

What do you do when you feel powerless?

It’s 2:21 am, and I can’t sleep. I crawl out of bed and drape my exhausted body on the couch in front of the TV. Late night TV is usually an effective sleeping pill. The microwave dings, announcing that the water is hot enough to make a cup of Sleepy Time tea. But the TV images and words bring me fully awake. In high definition, I see a colorful red, yellow, and white circle spinning across a map of the Carribean. I hear words like”catastrophic” and “150 miles per hour”. The scene morphs into a long line of people hugging their life necessities…

Someone once said, “What would you do if you knew you could not fail?” I would make my impossible dream possible. I would create a virtual, global community of intergenerational women, and those who love them, who are fearsome and generous, humble and honest, in pursuit of purpose. Women who come together to create beautifully rendered intimate moments. Women who are looking for a place to call their own. Because of you, my impossible dream is possible. Thank you! Every…

Be together, not the same.

Be together, not the same.

When I walk daily I intentionally “unplug”. There is nothing on my body to indicate how many steps I have taken during my four-mile walk. I listen to the birds singing and ducks honking as they make love to spring. I notice new flowers in bloom. I am at peace. Yet sometimes, today, for instance, unwanted thoughts insert themselves. Today it was the concept of “Othering”. I don’t like it and I like even less the fact that it is being intentionally used in this season’s political lexicon. It is not good news. By “Othering”, we mean any action by…

She’s survived child sexual abuse, family dysfunction, divorce, race and gender discrimination and navigating the world on an artificial limb. Once Bonnie was speaking at a conference in Worcester, Massachusetts. She wore a skirt and as close to heels as she could while wearing a titanium leg.…

What do you have to do?

What do you have to do?

Here is some more good “stuff” I discovered during my recovery while all I could do was read. Enjoy! “YOU don’t have to get a job that makes others feel comfortable about what they perceive as your success. You don’t have to explain what you plan to do with your life. You don’t have to justify your education by demonstrating its financial rewards. You don’t have to maintain an impeccable credit score. Anyone who expects you to do any of those things has no sense of history or economics or science or the arts. You have to pay your own…

What do you do when you can’t do you?

What do you do when you can't do you?

During my season of recovery, I am unable to a be fully me. And I am uncomfortable that I need so much help. I’m used to being the “helper”.  Nevertheless, without my asking, it’s like all my needs have been anticipated and perfect responses are in place and on time. It’s odd how I am struggling with receiving love from so many; the very thing my soul desires. In the meantime, I am occupied practicing the grace of gratitude. In an effort to fill the time between all the things I need to but can’t do, I am spending time with…
