History is my hobby; opening secrets of the past

History is my hobby; opening secrets of the past

“You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world’s problems at once but don’t ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.”[1] “History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.”[2]  “The point in history at which we stand is full of promise and danger. The world will either move forward toward unity and widely shared prosperity – or it…

What happens when you have to be light in the darkness?

What happens when you have to be light in the darkness?

“At night, the ocean can be a huge dark place. When riding the seas, you can never know for sure if the water will be calm or turbulent. You never know if you will drift off course or run aground. That is why there are lighthouses. When ships lose their way, they are guided by the lighthouse. When there is trouble or danger at sea, you can seek refuge by the lighthouse. During a storm, the lighthouse will always guide the ships safely to shore. Best of all, there is always someone in the lighthouse waiting. Be that someone. “Be…

A gentle reminder that tonight is the night!

A gentle reminder that tonight is the night!

Please join me on your TV, computer, or mobile device tonight, September 09, 2017 at 8:00 pm ET. Webcast Worldwide on www.radiofairfax.org. Someone once said, “What would you do if you knew you could not fail?” I would make my impossible dream possible. I would create a virtual, global community of intergenerational women, and those who love them, who are fearsome and generous, humble and honest, in pursuit of purpose. Women who come together to create beautifully rendered intimate moments. Women who are looking for a place to call their own. Because of you, my impossible dream is possible. Thank you! Every…

How do you spell B R A V E?

How do you spell B R A V E?

“Bonnie St. John lost her right leg at five years old to a bone disorder. She jokingly refers to herself as a one -legged African American girl from San Diego with no money and no snow who to took up skiing. As a black woman with one leg, she’s faced more hurdles than most. She’s survived child sexual abuse, family dysfunction, divorce, race and gender discrimination and navigating the world on an artificial limb. Once Bonnie was speaking at a conference in Worcester, Massachusetts. She wore a skirt and as close to heels as she could while wearing a titanium leg.…

Want to appear really smart this Sunday?

Want to appear really smart this Sunday?

When you stand before the Father figure in your life next Sunday, wear a huge smile and wrap it in a hug, and say: “Daddy, (Pops, Dad, or Whatever love language you use to talk to your Father), I need to tell how special today is.” In 1910, a Spokane, Washington, woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents. She was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day…

Speak and you will be heard.

Speak and you will be heard.

The millennial — “a turn-of-century generation,” a transformative generation, and a generation that kind of saw its view of the world and the ground on which it was standing unsettled, shifted, very rapidly and bluntly. While doing research about communications between generations, I listened to a panel discussion that included multigenerational participants. I captured several insights from an outstanding millennial participant on the panel to share with you. I felt more than comfortable with her as a steward of her generation. I invite you to read or listen to the entire podcast, Repairing the Breach referenced in the footnote. “Perhaps…

Can you remember once upon a time?

Can you remember once upon a time?

It took me a while to accept the fact that once upon a time never comes again. And thus, remembering will have to do. Once upon a time, March 21st was the day Mother would awaken to breakfast in bed, a dozen red roses, lots of singing and hugs and presents from Daddy and me. We treated birthdays as both intimate and big moments. We saw one another as gifts that God had given to us and the world. Once upon a time, Mother was a single parent while Daddy was away at war and disabled in a Veterans Hospital.…

Are you every woman?

Are you every woman?

“Strength has no gender.” “Our history is our strength.” “Writing women back into history.” “Know your history, know your power.” A few reminders that March is Women’s History Month.  I encourage you to celebrate today and everyday women everywhere for their strength and resilience and legacies. Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.”  In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated…

Where did you get polished?

Where did you get polished?

This Black History Month, I want to recognize a lesser known African American educational legacy. I was inspired by the book called Certain People by Stephen Birmingham written in 1977. Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown, the first president of Palmer Institute, watched as her students arrived by Pullman and chauffeur-driven limousines. She used to say, “That anybody who is anybody sends their children to Palmer. They come to us, and we polish off any rough edges”. Palmer Institute was, in other words, the first and only private black coeducational finishing school in America. Established in 1902 in Sedalia, North Carolina with…
