This Is Us featuring author, coach, and entrepreneur Sharon Kelly discussing blended families.

Per the U.S. Bureau of Census, 1300 new stepfamilies are formed each day. Forty percent of families in the U.S. are blended with at least one partner having a child from a previous relationship before marriage. The number of kids living in blended families has been stable for nearly thirty years. Children of Hispanic, Black, and white backgrounds are equally likely to live in this type of family. A little over a generation. You will increase your chances of successfully bonding with your new stepchildren by thinking about what they need. Age, gender, and personality are not irrelevant, but all children……

Black History Month Celebrates a Kaleidoscope of African Americans

Black History Month Celebrates a Kaleidoscope of African Americans

Did you know? The NAACP was founded on February 12, 1909, the centennial anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. In the decades that followed, mayors of cities across the country began issuing yearly proclamations recognizing Negro History Week. By the late 1960s, thanks in part to the civil rights movement and a growing awareness of black identity, Negro History Week had evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of……

Were it not for those who care featuring Ambreen Rizvi, CEO and Founder of Brigade of Mercy

Were it not for those who care featuring Ambreen Rizvi, CEO and Founder of Brigade of Mercy

To create our common thought space for this show, I ask one of my favorite questions, “What if?” Those two words are pregnant with possibilities. So, what if you believed the most outstanding service you could offer in life is to be a light on the path? What if your life becomes a shining symbol for others. What if you let everything you do be of service to someone. What if you stand tall in the knowledge of who you are. What if you stand proudly during tough times. Your affirmation might say, “Today, I am devoted to shining the light……

SECOND STORY, a sanctuary for youth who have been left out, left over, and left behind featuring Cathy Benn, Vice President of Residential Services.

Consider this: “On any given night, approximately 41,000 unaccompanied youth ages 13-25 experience homelessness. The average age a teen enters the sex trade in the US is 12 to 14 years old. Many victims are runaway girls who were sexually abused as children. Many “latchkey” children experience stressful and even dangerous situations without ready access to adult guidance and support. It is estimated that as many as 10 million American children care for themselves before or after school. Many latchkey kids begin their self-care responsibilities The US teen birth rate (births per 1,000 females aged 15 to 19 years) has been declining since……

Rotary Opens Opportunities Through Service: Moving Forward with Patricia Borowski District 7610 Governor Elect

Patricia is a symbol of Rotary’s transforming commitment to diversity and inclusion. Women join the senior leadership ranks. It has been a process, not an event. Consider some of the journey’s highlights: 1987 On 4 May, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender. Rotary issues a policy statement that any Rotary club in the United States can admit qualified women into membership. Sylvia Whitlock, of the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, becomes the first female Rotary club president. 1989 At its first meeting after the 1987 U.S. Supreme Court……

Rotary Opens Opportunites Through Service with Meesh Peters in Swaziland

Rotary Opens Opportunites Through Service with Meesh Peters in Swaziland

I echo the words of author and coach Iyanla Vanzant in her 2000 book, Until Today for her view of service. And I quote: “The greatest service I can offer is standing confidently in my power. It does not serve you or the world for you to behave as if you are powerless. You can think yourself into and out of any situation with which you are confronted. You have the ability to speak for yourself. You can defend yourself! Promote yourself. Encourage yourself. Teach yourself! Correct yourself. That is power. You have a heart. Through it, you can experience……

Moments of Mindfulness: What About the Children?

Moments of Mindfulness: What About the Children?

You love, you marry, you have children. Mothers are children’s first teachers from the womb. Yet, at some point, parents realize that the multiple intelligences of their children need enhanced nurturing. Their minds and spirits need challenge and encouragement and outlets to creativity.  The subtle byproducts of healthy educational systems are critical life skills to include confidence, embracing diversity, good communication, high ethical standards, honesty, teamwork, the ability to listen, authenticity, selflessness, understanding, and empowerment. Children are unlimited possibilities waiting to be born. And yet, we pay those we trust with their advancement approximately 20% less than similar professions.[1] Enter,……

Moments of Mindfulness: “And They Call it Puppy Love”

Moments of Mindfulness: "And They Call it Puppy Love"

Inspired by the pandemic crisis, this 1970s love song title means something fun and new to me. About two months ago I fell in love. It was sudden and it was powerful. His cuteness came into view about a half a block away. I stooped down on one knee and whispered loudly, “Are you a Westie?” I knew Puppy Otis heard me because he immediately began to run to me, dragging his humans out of their leisurely walk. Puppy Otis panted as he ran, “There is Miss Tyra! She looks like she needs a hug, and I have one. I……

Moments of Mindfulness: History is paying us a visit.

Moments of Mindfulness: History is paying us a visit.

This week I received a not so gentle email reminder of the timeless nuance of history. It included newspaper clippings from the early 19th century. Women sat at typewriters working while wearing face masks and gloves. People gathered at a market to buy and sell necessities all wearing facial masks. Of course, I was drawn to the women’s picture- frame hats and how creatively they had fashioned a stylish face mask to wrap around the hat. If was also a reminder of our inconvenient truth of today. But alas, a light in the darkness! The poem  “This is Timeless…” was……
