Please Meet Charlotte E. Ray

Please Meet Charlotte E. Ray

It’s February again. I thought I would highlight some less obvious African Americans who have contributed to the tapestry of our American history. As the first woman admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia and the first African-American woman certified as a lawyer in the United States, civil and women’s rights activist and teacher Charlotte E. Ray truly earned her place in history. She was born in New York City on January 13, 1850, to Charles Bennett Ray and Charlotte Augusta Burroughs Ray.  Charles was a minister at New York’s Bethesda Congregational Church, and editor of the Colored American, an abolitionist…

Let Me Introduce Garrett Morgan

Let Me Introduce Garrett Morgan

Born in Paris, Kentucky, on March 4, 1877, Garrett Morgan was the seventh of 11 children. When Morgan was in his mid-teens, he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, to look for work. Jobs at several sewing-machine factories soon captured his imagination and determine his future. Learning the inner workings of the machines and how to fix them, Morgan obtained a patent for an improved sewing machine and opened his own repair business. Morgan experimented with and finally tested a hair straightener products for African Americans.  When that worked, he quickly established the G.A. Morgan Hair Refining Company and sold the cream…

Are you ready to adjust your focus?

Are you ready to adjust your focus?

“Ten years from now, it won’t really matter what shoes you wore today, how your hair looked, or what brand of clothes you wore.  What will matter is how you lived, how you loved, and what you learned along the way. Deep down you know this already, right? Yet today, just like the majority of us, you are easily distracted and derailed by the insignificant. You give too much of your time to meaningless time-wasters. You step through days, skeptically, with inner resistance. You take your important relationships for granted. You get caught up in hurtful drama. You give in…

Is your legacy your testimony?

Is your legacy your testimony?

“Dear Family, I am sure this letter may be difficult to read. It is difficult to write. It is both painful and joyous. The reason I am writing is to thank you. How do you say thank you that means that because of you and your daughter, I am alive to speak any words at all? I am alive for fifty-one years to continue living. The importance and immense meaning of the gift you and your daughter have given me, truly cannot be expressed in words. I can try, though. I must try because I think you should know that this life…

Do you do more than what is expexcted?

Do you do more than what is expexcted?

“Do you go the extra mile? Do you do more than what is expected? Do you expect the best? These questions pertain not only to your relationship with the world but also how you treat yourself. Do you go the extra mile when it comes to you, or do you think that the least is enough for you? There are people who believe that struggle, servitude, and sacrifice are the best they can hope for in this life. They look for ways and reasons to be okay with the things they believe are not okay with your lives. Other people…

Christmas is coming! Do you understand the unwritten rules of gift-giving?

Christmas is coming! Do you understand the unwritten rules of gift-giving?

“Each of us carries within ourselves a set of rules about gift-giving. Seldom acknowledged and rarely discussed, these rules determine what we give, how much we give, and to whom we give. Despite living only in our minds and expectations, the unwritten rules of gift-giving govern everything from the office Secret Santa exchange to the family’s morning under the Christmas tree. Problem is, “unwritten” means that gift-giving rules are subject to interpretation—both in our own minds and in our dealings with others. Even in a single family, it’s common to find members with radically different ideas when it comes to “the…

Moving from good to great

Moving from good to great

“What if you knew your life would work out for you when you realize every decision you make is based on everything that has happened in your life? Think about that… that’s big! Now for a quick test. Check off the ones that you don’t do.  Ready? “Are you paying attention? Are you aware of what you do? Are you paying attention to the results you get? Are you paying attention to how you feel? When was the last time you took stock of what was going on around you? Are you paying attention to what you do, or are…

Dreams can come true

Dreams can come true

I was born into a once upon a time and a happily ever after world. There was a song in the musical fairy tale Cinderella that claimed: A dream is a wish your heart makes when you’re fast asleep. In dreams, you will have no heartaches, whatever you wish for you keep. Have faith in your dreams and someday, your rainbow will come shining through. No matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing, the dream the that you wish will come true. Then you wake up. What?!!!  You mean all I need is faith, and my…

Othering, diversity, and inclusion

Othering, diversity, and inclusion

When I walk, I intentionally “unplug”. There is nothing on my body to indicate how many steps I have taken during my four-mile adventure. I consciously immerse my senses in the marvels of nature; birds soaring in and out of trees, dogs walking their owners, and humans chasing the healthiest versions of themselves. I am at peace. Yet sometimes, today, for instance, annoying thoughts invade my peace.Today it is the concept of “Othering”. “Othering” means any action by which an individual or group becomes mentally classified in somebody’s mind as “not one of us”. Rather than always remembering that every person is a complex…
