Dan Fogelberg wrote a song many years ago titled To The Morning. The chorus included these words: “And it’s going to be a day, there is really no way to say no to the morning”
So the morning comes faithfully every day and without any help from us. The only thing we can affect is how we greet it. And although the morning is inevitable, our ability to enjoy it isn’t. We have to be intentional about our joy.
Personally, I love the morning! I am told that since I was an infant, I met the morning with giggles and coos and a smile when I figured out how to do that. My love-the-morning habit continued to the extent that my college roommate perfected throwing a shoe at me when my morning joy included a song. She was a night person.
The more seasoned I become, the more time I spend in a place called “gratitude”. Grace and mercy live there as well. It’s easy to find. You can get there from anywhere. All you have to do is think about something for which you are grateful and there you are. There is no admission charge and it’s open 24/7.
I visit and linger in gratitude’s place before I get out of bed each morning. By the time I say “thank you” for all my blessings, I feel like I can handle anything the day presents. I feel like I have one more opportunity to be the best I can be. At times, the new day is just the gift I need to correct something I messed up yesterday. I believe we need to live intentionally in order to live the life for which we were created.
Blogger Angel Chernoff suggests:
“Today can be great, but only if you make it so. – Why do we often feel so powerless? Because we convince ourselves that we are. We wait for things to be given to us – entitlements. But in life, there are no true entitlements, and the truth is that if you want something then you need to make it happen for yourself. You need to work for it. Whether or not today is a great day doesn’t depend on the weather. It doesn’t depend on your “mood” (that’s also within your control). It doesn’t depend on anyone else. If you want to have a pleasant and productive day then choose to have one. It’s all about your perception and what you choose to believe and do.”
Do you consider each day a gift, perhaps even a surprise?
